I just visited your site and now following. I really want to make those brownies! I would love for you to reblog the Old Fashion Chocolate Cobble. The cobble is a very old recipe, it was shared with me from a school teacher. Thanks for the comment, and let me know if the healthier version works.
Molly said:
i’m working on making it right now. It has cooked for 50 minutes, and the top looks delicious, but the bottom has become soupy, i’m not even sure how that happened!
Karen Gentry said:
That’s the fudge it makes in the middle. Be careful not to over cook it 🙂 The soupy gooey fudge is what makes it sooo good! Thanks for the comment 🙂

I made your recipe tonight, I did not get to taste it because I am on diet however my family just loved it. Thanks so much for sharing.

As soon as I can get to the grocery and get some cocoa…I’m making this…I’ve used all mine in my protein brownies! 🙂 Love chocolate!
Karen Gentry said:
This is a great recipe when you need something really quick, and most of the time you will have all the ingredients. Very simple and delish!
thewhitedish said:
I got my cocoa…now to figure out when I can make it! I’m already committed to making some other things for Easter…BUT I may just have to make this and take to both sides of the family for taste testing. When I have my “cleaner” version, I’ll let you know!
Karen Gentry said:
Great! Don’t forget the ice cream 🙂 It’s one of those desserts that screams ice cream.

Made this today, love the way it cooked, but felt it was lacking a little richness.Any suggestions
Karen Gentry said:
Glad you gave it a try. Maybe try some chocolate chips if you want it richer. If you do coat the chocolate chips in flour first so they want sink to the bottom. If you try it let me know if it’s good that way. Thanks 🙂

Looks fab! Trying for 4th of July. I’m a fan of RICH desserts. What do you think about replacing the water with evaporated milk?
Karen Gentry said:
I think you picked a hit for your 4th of July dessert. I would be afraid to use evaporated milk without doing a small test. I would hate for it to flop on you. If it would work it would be richer. The water is what makes the fudge. If you do give it a try please post so we all will know. Thanks for the comment!
Sandy said:
Maybe use cream instead of milk? Or 1/4 cup milk and 1/4 cup cream? I found it very rich and gooey .. But it’s all preference
Karen Gentry said:
Hi Sandy, Thank you so much for sharing the recipe! I too want to try it with coffee and, or milk. It’s rich enough to me, but never can have too much rich and gooey 😉 I will post when I get to try the coffee, and hope you do too. Have you tried the Hot Fudge Pudding Cake I have on here? It has coffee in it. Thanks again, and have a great evening.
Bre said:
Does the water cover the entire dish?
Karen Gentry said:
Yes, pour it all over. I know it sounds weird, but it works.
thewhitedish said:
Well I tried a “cleaner version using sucunat…turned out okay, not quite sweet enough…going to try this again! May add some honey this next time around, maybe a little peanut butter?

Thanks for this! My family has a very similar “vanilla” one, which was passed down through a great, great aunt. It’s pretty much the same as yours, just omit the cocoa, and add a tsp of vanilla to the cake mix. We always eat ours with ice cream too. I’ll definitely try yours out!
Karen Gentry said:
I love to try old family recipes…would love to get my hands on more. I didn’t think about making it in vanilla, but I will give it a try. Thanks for the comment and hope you try it 🙂

Christine Jordan said:
I love this recipe and have my own with a different name but all the same 🙂 Also hot cocoa mix works well and yes for those that have not tried it yes you do NOT stir the water and it’s so neat the way it works, but so worth it 🙂 This is also awesome with whipped cream 🙂 Thanks for posting it.
Karen Gentry said:
Thank you Christine for your comment. I love the Chocolate Cobbler and I have never tried hot cocoa mix. I will diffently give that a try. Thanks a lot for sharing!!!

Karen Gentry said:
Hi, The cocoa is unsweetened.

I’ve made a similar recipe for years. Mine, however, has strong coffee poured over it instead of water. It enhances the richness, I think. And of course, copious amounts of ice cream are required! 🙂

can you use a metal pan to bake it in or does it have to be glass?
Karen Gentry said:
Hi Pamela,
I have always used glass when making this recipe, so I can’t really tell you if it turns out different. Sorry, but I do know that the heat passes through the glass cooking faster. I just feel glass is better 🙂 Thanks for the comment.

Jerrica said:
By 1 1/2 teaspoon and 1 1/2 cup, do you mean 1 and a 1/2 or 1/2 of a teaspoon/cup?
Karen Gentry said:
Hi Jerrica, Are you referring the all-purpose flour version? [Can also use 1 cup all-purpose flour if you don’t have self-rising, add 1 1/2 teaspoon baking powder and 1/2 teaspoon salt] if so,
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 ½ teaspoon baking powder
½ teaspoon salt
Let me know if that’s not it. Thanks, Karen

This looks delicious. Could I use almond milk instead of regular milk? My husband has a severe milk allergy, but really wants to try this.
Karen Gentry said:
Hi Amanda,
Thanks for your comment. To be honest I have never tasted almond milk. I’m not sure if it has a taste to it that would change the chocolate cobbler. That would be good to know for all the others that have a milk allergy. If you try it would you please post to let us know. Thanks again, sorry I couldn’t tell you.

I pinned this months ago on my Pinterest. Today is my husband’s birthday and out of all 200+ pins I have on my dessert board he chose this one for his B-day dessert. I knew it would catch his eye as he is a total choc junkie! The other dessert he wanted was a strawberry bundt cake but I talked him into letting me just add strawberrys to the side of this cake. Ice cream of course has to be served with it. Can’t wait to see how it turns out. Thanks for an easy have everything already on hand dessert! Happy 4th of July!

Hi, I made this cobbler tonight. I saw the recipe last week and have put off making it until I could get ice cream into the house. lol The batter tasted great so I knew that the cobbler would be wonderful. We ate it the first time hot with Blue Bell Homemade Vanilla Ice Cream and a ribbon of caramel over the top. New favorite dessert. Thanks. The only part that I didn’t like was that the recipe is made from ingredients that are always in my pantry so it will be too easy to have access to this winner. Oh, well, may be time for me to exhibit some self control…
Karen Gentry said:
Ha! ha! I completely understand 🙂 I have a feeling you will be making it again…soon. So glad you liked it, it is one of my personal favorites. You just gotta have the ice cream!!! Thank you for letting me know.
Kristy said:
I have no idea what happened, but I made this and it flopped! 😦 I got a very thin cake like layer and a bunch of chocolate flavored water on the bottom. No fudge like consistency at all. Had to throw it out. Poor hubby was soooo disappointed. Not sure what happened but it is definitely not what the others are raving about. Any ideas on what happened? I am pretty sure I followed the recipe correctly.
Karen Gentry said:
So sorry! Something definitely went wrong. I have made this a hundred times and it turns out perfect every time. You are the first person I have ever heard say that. Please look at the recipe again to see if you left something out. Again sorry…hope you will give it another try. It is well worth another chance.

Size of glass cookware will make a big difference -make sure it is the size required (depth will make a difference.. Had a friend use a deep small dish and it didn’t work). I also found that reducing water to 1 1/3 cup made a huge difference to my results !!! Hope you try again!! Good luck

This is sooooo fantastic! I love the simplistic ingredients!! I reduced to 1 1/3 water as last time 1 1/2 seemed to be too much and took a very long time to cook. I have forwarded the recipe to everyone and anyone 🙂 soooo good!!

My husband loves this recipe, and he is not much of a dessert person. One question, he would like for there to be more “goo” at the bottom so should I double the mixture I put on the bottom of the dish or the top mixture?
Karen Gentry said:
Wonderful! Glad he loves it! I haven’t double anything but I would try to maybe double the top mixture. Just guessing because I haven’t done that before. Extra goo would be great 🙂 Thanks for the comment!

It gave me the option of going back to Pinterest, getting more information, or proceeding to the site…I chose to proceed, and am glad I did; but you may want to check that out.

I have this recipe from my grandmother (it must have been in some cookbook years back). It is exactly the same except we call it Chocolate Pudding Cake. I mean, a cobbler has to have fruit by definition right??
For those who said it was too watery, let it cool and the fudge will get to a pudding consistancy. It will not get hard like actual candy fudge. I have always cooked it in a 9×9 glass pan but increased the cooking time to 45-50 min. It was the very first thing I learned to bake as a little girl. I love it!!
Karen Gentry said:
Hi Mary, This is a very old recipe that is still made in schools today (Home Ec Class). This is the dessert they always make at a local school. Super easy to make and delish! Thanks for the comment!

What’s a good way to tell when this cake is done. There seemed to be quite a bit of liquid in the bottom after the 40 minutes. Is that correct?
Karen Gentry said:
I always bake the recipe time. It may not look done, but it is. The gooey cocolate in the middle is to spread over the cake you spoon out…like putting hot fudge over your cake.

I have been making this for years and love it. I always serve mine with amaretto whipped cream – yummy!
Karen Gentry said:
YUM! Whipped cream is perfect!!! I love to make it look like a hot fudge sundae.

Back in the 50s and 60s we called this Pudding Cake. There were actually box mixes to make this. I loved lemon pudding cake. I’ll have to see if I can figure it out. I think if I just replace the cocoa in the top layer with lemon pudding mix…
Karen Gentry said:
I love lemon! Let me know how that turns out. Thanks for the comment!
windi said:
wondering if you would know how to “single serving” size it. I live alone right now and don’t want to make a huge one. Thinking ramekin size? Any thoughts on how to decrease the recipe?

I haven’t made a smaller version, but maybe you could try to half the recipe. Hope it turns out for you 🙂

OMG! I made the chocolate cobbler this evening and just finished gobbling it up! This is delicious! I did make a couple of additions. I used dark chocolate cocoa powder which made it practically black but awesome. I added expresso to the hot water at the end to pour over the top. Chocolatey Goodness! I felt so greedy after eating it because I followed the recommendation of adding ice cream (Rum Raisin) and took the liberty of adding pecans. Whoa! So good! Thank you for the recipe!
Karen Gentry said:
Wow! Sounds like you made it even better!!! The next time I make it I’m trying it that way. Thanks for the comment and so glad you enjoyed it 😉
Lesley said:
Looks delicious and quick to make for this beginner. Quick question… do you preheat the oven or put it in cold?
Karen Gentry said:
Hi, Yes you do preheat the oven. Hope you give it a try 🙂
Mary said:
Ohhhh, I grew up eating this. Mom would put it in the oven just as supper was ready. She served it warm for dessert…. sometimes with ice cream. Yummo!
Karen Gentry said:
You must have had a sweet mom 🙂 I hope my daughter has that memory of me. We love this stuff! Thanks for the comment!
pandaposes said:
This recipe looks wonderful! I love that I already have all the ingredients here at the house… No random “secret” ingredient to track down, just classic delicious ingredients! I think I’ll give this a try sometime very soon. Maybe I’ll make it for my husband’s and my anniversary dessert at the end of the month… not that I need a special occasion to enjoy chocolate! 🙂
Karen Gentry said:
Hope you give it a try. I think you will love it and Happy Anniversary! 😉
Donna Hagood said:
I have made this a couple of times, me and my family love it!

Pamela said:
I would love to make this recipe. Has anyone tried with gluten free flour??
Karen Gentry said:
Hi Pamela, I’m sorry, but I’m not sure. I remember someone said they were going to try that, but I didn’t hear if they did or not.
Kimberly Hudzik said:
I made this the other night, and while it was good it wasn’t as sweet or chocolatly as I thought it was going to be. What kind of coco do you use? I used Hershey’s baking coco powder and it tasted a little powdery.
Karen Gentry said:
Hi Kimberly, I also use Hershey’s, but haven’t had any problems. Everyone is different about their sugar. I’m one that doesn’t like something too sweet, so maybe that’s why I love this recipe. To me it’s just right…maybe you can adjust it a little next time. Hope you liked it well enough to try again. Thanks for the comment.
Pauline said:
I just made this but was not sure how to tell when it was done. My oven does not work properly so I always have to leave it in for less time than the recipe calls. How can I tell if it is done?
Karen Gentry said:
The edges turn cake like, but the middle is gooey. You may think it’s not done, but it is. Hope you enjoy it!
Kara said:
What if I use all purpose flour and unsweetened cocoa?! Would that be a no no?! 🙂
Karen Gentry said:
Hi, If you don’t have self-rising flour you can substitute with-
1 cup all-purpose, add 1 1/2 teaspoon baking powder, and 1/2 teaspoon salt. I haven’t made it this way, but hope this helps.
Tonia said:
I cook and bake all the time, but I completely screwed this up. So disappointed. I have to try again.
Karen Gentry said:
Oh, so sorry Tonia. I hope you figure out what happen. I think for a homemade brownie these are really good. Let me know if you try them again.
juliette said:
I’ve tried the recipe, but we didn’t really feel the taste of chocolate and that was not cooked at the bottom, that was pretty strange :S
Karen Gentry said:
Hi Juliette, the chocolate is gooey in the middle like a cobbler. Sorry you didn’t like it…
jennifer said:
Hi! Do you use dark or light brown sugar? Thanks!! Sounds yummy!!
Karen Gentry said:
Hi Jennifer, I use light brown sugar.

How many people does this make for? I would love to make this for Christmas Eve dinner but we’re having 14- 15 people. Would I need to double the recipe?
Karen Gentry said:
Hi Ally, You would need to make two of this dish for that many people. I think the last time I made it we got 6 or 7 servings. Someone always wants seconds 🙂 Hope you all enjoy it!!!
Maria said:
I’m baking things for everyone until New Year’s and giving them as presents. A friend gave me this recipe for my dad. He thought that it was disgusting and that if I can’t even finish baking a cake, I might want to give up altogether.
It’s 6 in the morning now and I just got back from the kitchen. Dad’s face is completely covered in chocolate and he’s using his finger to eat what’s left in the bowl. He asked me if I hid any of it because three servings weren’t enough. Now I’m thinking about baking it for his birthday and make him watch us eat it. 😛 Thanks for the recipe!
Karen Gentry said:
That is so funny!!! Wish I could have seen a picture of that 🙂 You had me going there…sooo glad he loved it!!!

I made one last night and it’s gone this a.m….only 3 of us in the house! My son said “Mom, you hit it out of the park.” I thought about making another one today but trying to help my husband lose weight. Thanks, Karen! A wonderful, easy recipe!!

I just made this, but theres big pools of water on top. I don’t know what I did wrong
Karen Gentry said:
So sorry to hear that happened to you. The middle is fudgy, but not like water. Not sure what could have went wrong, unless you mixed the water with the ingredients. I hope you give it another try. Please let me know.
Mary said:
I have better luck using All-purpose flour PLUS 2 tsp baking powder and 1/4 tsp salt instead of the self-rising flour.
Karen Gentry said:
I haven’t tried it that way, but I’m sure it works. Thanks for the comment!
Rhonda Price Beagan said:
This looks sooooooo good! Just put mine in the oven! I also added chopped pecans to the last list of ingredients, and just sent a text to my hubby asking him to bring home some vanilla ice cream! Anxious to try it tonight. I also posted this on my Facebook Page and I think it’s becoming an epidemic! Everyone is wanting to try it!!…LOL
Karen Gentry said:
GREAT! I hope you love it! Don’t forget it is gooey in the middle. It is so good and one of my very favorites! Thank you for letting me know. Glad you’re getting the ice crem 🙂
Rhonda Price Beagan said:
It was a HIT!!! But I agree with one of the other comments, that it wasn’t as rich as I thought it would be, so I also drizzled Hershey’s Dark Chocolate Syrup on top of it and oh my word!!! It added the perfect touch to it. I also loved it with the pecans. Will definitely make this again!! Gonna go look around your Blog and see what else you have cookin up!…lol
Karen Gentry said:
Glad to hear it was a hit! I hope you find something else you would like to make. Please feel free to ask any questions. I love to cook and today I tried a new recipe for Red Velvet cupcakes, and they are the BEST EVER!!! I thought I had the best one before I discoved this one. Happy Valentines Day!
Tiffany said:
This is THE BEST/easiest dessert recipe…. I have made it 3 times in a month lol (I didnt have brown sugar the first time so i substituted with regular sugar and it wasnt much different to me, but i like it with brown sugar better) The only thing is I would recommend making two if you have more than a family of 4 that will be eating this…it goes FAST! I had a few questions, can you double this recipe? Can you freeze it? THANKS!
Karen Gentry said:
Hi Tiffany, I love it when people try this and love it as much as I do. It’s soooo good! I have better luck when I just make two, I haven’t tried to freeze it yet (there’s never any left…lol) Thanks for the comment 🙂

Can all purpose flour be used or does it need to be self rising?
Karen Gentry said:
Yes it is self-rising flour. I have put the ingredients for all-purpose in one of the eariler post if you would like to try it. Thanks for the comment!
Ericka said:
Just made this for dessert for after dinner and WHOA. I used hot water, only 1 1/3c instead of 1 1/2c. It turned out perfect! I’ve already “snuck” a taste but it ended up being a whole row. Even put whipped cream on the cobbler itself and spooned it straight to my mouth. Oink oink! But soooo delicious!!!
Karen Gentry said:
Awesome!!! I love it!!! What a way to end the evening with a satisfied tummy 😉 Thanks Ericka for letting me know!…(now I want some)

Would this work in temptations ceramic bakeware?
Karen Gentry said:
Very good question…I’m sorry I haven’t tried ceramic bakeware with this recipe. I’m just not sure what to tell you. Sorry 😦
Cindy said:
. I will have to try it I guess as I don’t own a glass dish. It’s not a 9 x 13 it’s like 8.would that still work?
Karen Gentry said:
Yes, the size should work fine. I hope it turns out for ya!
Linda Parks Watson said:
Has anyone used a sugar substitute like equal? Staying away from sugar will the recipe be the same?
Karen Gentry said:
No one has told me they tried a sugar substitute. I haven’t tried it, so I really can’t say. If you do please let me know. TY!

I just put this in the oven for my husband and myself to enjoy. I have a larger baking dish (10.5×14.75, I think?), so I doubled the recipe and put it all in that one pan. I also decided to use virgin coconut oil instead of butter, and I added shredded coconut to the batter. About a cup, I think. The batter tastes great! I’m hoping it bakes well.
Karen Gentry said:
Yum!!! I haven’t tried coconut before. If it works please let me know. Thanks for the comment!
Leslie said:
It turned out well! I wish it were a bit more chocolate-y, but it had a very good flavor. I only baked it a few minutes longer than the recommended time (five minutes at most), and everything seemed to go the way it should have. It’s really good with whipped cream on top! :o)
Karen Gentry said:
Glad it worked 🙂 I like it warm with ice cream.
Evelyn said:
What can you use in place of the self-rising flour?
Karen Gentry said:
I know there has been others that used something different, but I never have. I can’t honestly tell you any other way to change the recipe and it taste the same. Thanks for the comment!
Rebecca B. said:
Have you ever tried adding pecan pieces?
Karen Gentry said:
I haven’t, but my husband wants me to next time. It would have to be good 🙂
Sandy Priestly said:
Been making a very similar recipe of this with veg/canola oil instead of the butter for years…have used skim milk too….it’s actually not too high calorie or fat….everyone loves it – well not if you only eat a serving…not the whole pan!!!….we call it Hot Chocolate pudding cake…..and we make it all in the same greased pan- no dishes to clean up!!!! Served with thick greek yogurt for the calorie/fat counters or plain, or with cool whip or ice cream….tasty any way!!!
Karen Gentry said:
Hi Sandy, I haven’t made a low-cal version, but I really need to give it a try. This stuff is good any way, so I couldn’t go wrong 🙂 Thank you for the comment!
Marika Walker said:
ah! was so excited for this since I actually had all the ingredients on hand.. didn’t realize there was self rising vs all purpose flour.. I was so excited and made it as the recipe calls for but with all purpose and it did not work out. It’s all flat and watery on top.
Karen Gentry said:
So sorry!!! Yes, it is self-rising flour 😦 I hope you try it again sometime.
Angie said:
Loved this recipe so much! Easy and so delicious. Reminds me of a dessert my mom made that she called “Fudge Pudding Cake”. It’s not often that recipes from the internet make it onto a recipe card and into my permanent stash but this one absolutely did. Thank you so much for sharing!!! 🙂

Thank you Angie, I’m so glad you enjoyed it! It’s so easy to put together and taste great. Thanks for the comment 🙂

I am so glad I found you. I used to make this all of the time. I originally found the recipe on a bag of white lily flour at least 30 years ago. As the children grew I stopped making it as often and lost the recipe. I bet I don’t lose it now.
Karen Gentry said:
Hi Marie I’m so glad you found my blog. I love this simple recipe, not only is it good, I always have the ingredients on hand. I hope you find some recipes to try 🙂 Thanks for the comment!

So…I tried making this last night. I followed the directions exactly. After cooking for 40 minutes there was still standing water on top. So I cooked it a little longer and the water was still on top. Any idea what I did wrong?
Karen Gentry said:
Sorry that happened, I’m not sure what yours looked like but it is supposed to be wet. Did you use self-rising flour?

thinking of making this for a christmas present. would it do well if I made it, baked it, then froze it?

I have never froze it, because it’s so quick and easy to put together. Sorry, but I’m not sure how it would do.

I made this last night and I thought it was delicious. I read some of the reviews that said it was lacking a little something, so I used a caramel coffee creamer in the place of milk. I thought it was perfect. I will try it substituting the water for coffee next time!

Oh, yum! Caramel coffee creamer sounds great. I really love this simple dessert!
